The judge of Cascaes, seeking a position in a higher court, was staying in Lisbon, in the parish of Ajuda in 1784. It was in this year that Simão, the second-last of his children, was born. He, always blessed by fortune, secured a transfer to Villa Real, his supreme ambition.

Rita told her husband that she was afraid of being devoured by rats; that that house was a den of beasts; that the ceilings were collapsing; that the walls would not withstand the winter; that the precepts of marital uniformity did not oblige a delicate wife, accustomed to the cushions of the king's palace, to freeze to death.

The judge distributed the pastries among the boys, and ordered the tray to be kept, saying that he would consider it a mockery to receive a gift of sweets, which were worth ten patacas, and of course, the pastries had come as an ornament of the tray.

E assim é que ainda hoje, em Villa Real, quando se dá um caso analogo de ficar alguem com o conteúdo e continente, diz a gente da terra: «Aquelle é como o doutor brocas.»
