Eu chamo-me Theodoro―e fui amanuense do Ministerio do Reino.

My name is Theodoro - and I was a clerk at the Ministry of the Kingdom.

N'esse tempo vivia eu á travessa da Conceição n.º 106, na casa d'hospedes da D. Augusta, a esplendida D. Augusta, viuva do major Marques.

At that time, I lived at 106 Travessa da Conceição, in the guesthouse of D. Augusta, the splendid D. Augusta, widow of Major Marques.

Tinha dois companheiros: o Cabrita, empregado na Administração do bairro central, esguio e amarello como uma tocha d'enterro; e o possante, o exuberante tenente Couceiro, grande tocador de viola franceza.

I had two companions: Cabrita, an employee in the central district administration, slim and sallow like a funeral torch; and the powerful, exuberant Lieutenant Couceiro, a great player of the French viola.

A minha existencia era bem equilibrada e suave.

My existence was well-balanced and smooth.

Toda a semana, de mangas de lustrina á carteira da minha repartição, ia lançando, n'uma formosa letra cursiva, sobre o papel Tojal do Estado, estas phrases faceis: «Ill.mo e Exc.mo Snr.

Every week, from the sleeves of my uniform to the wallet of my department, I would write, in a beautiful cursive handwriting, on the Tojal paper of the State, these simple phrases: "Illustrious and Excellent Sir."

―Tenho a honra de communicar a V. Exc.ª...

- "I have the honor to inform you..."

Tenho a honra de passar ás mãos de V. Exc.ª, Ill.mo e Exc.mo Snr...»

Aos domingos repousava: installava-me então no canapé da sala de jantar, de cachimbo nos dentes, e admirava a D. Augusta, que, em dias de missa, costumava limpar com clara d'ovo a caspa do tenente Couceiro.

On Sundays, I rested: I would then sit on the sofa in the dining room, with a pipe in my mouth, and admire D. Augusta, who, on days of mass, used to clean the lieutenant Couceiro's dandruff with egg white.

Esta hora, sobretudo no verão, era deliciosa: pelas janellas meio cerradas penetrava o bafo da soalheira, algum repique distante dos sinos da Conceição Nova, e o arrulhar das rolas na varanda;

This hour, especially in summer, was delightful: through the half-closed windows came the breath of the sun, some distant ringing of the bells of Conceição Nova, and the cooing of pigeons on the balcony;

a monotona susurração das moscas balançava-se sobre a velha cambraia, antigo véo nupcial da Madame Marques, que cobria agora no aparador os pratos de cerejas bicaes;

the monotonous whispering of flies swayed over the old brocade, an old wedding veil of Madame Marques, which now covered the cherry pie plates on the sideboard.

pouco a pouco o tenente, envolvido n'um lençol como um idolo no seu manto, ia adormecendo, sob a fricção molle das carinhosas mãos da D. Augusta; e ella, arrebitando o dedo minimo branquinho e papudo, sulcava-lhe as rêpas lustrosas com o pentesinho dos bichos...

Little by little, the lieutenant, wrapped in a sheet like an idol in its mantle, would fall asleep, under the soft friction of D. Augusta's affectionate hands; and she, curling her white and plump little finger, would comb his shiny curls with a small comb...

Eu então, enternecido, dizia á deleitosa senhora:

Then, moved, I would say to the delightful lady:

―Ai D. Augusta, que anjo que é!

- "Oh D. Augusta, what an angel she is!"

Ella ria; chamava-me enguiço!

She would laugh; she would call me a fool!

Eu sorria, sem me escandalisar.

I would smile, without being offended.

Enguiço era com effeito o nome que me davam na casa―por eu ser magro, entrar sempre as portas com o pé direito, tremer de ratos, ter á cabeceira da cama uma lithographia de Nossa Senhora das Dôres que pertencera á mamã, e corcovar.

Indeed, 'Enguiço' was the name they gave me in the house - because I was thin, always entered the doors with my right foot, trembled at the sight of mice, had a lithograph of Our Lady of Sorrows at my bedside that had belonged to my mother, and had a crooked back.

Infelizmente corcóvo―do muito que verguei o espinhaço, na Universidade, recuando como uma pêga assustada diante dos senhores Lentes; na repartição, dobrando a fronte ao pó perante os meus Directores Geraes.

Unfortunately, I was a coward - because I bent my back so much, at the University, retreating like a frightened mare in front of Mr. Lentes; at the office, bowing my head to the dust in front of my Directors Generals.

Esta attitude de resto convém ao bacharel; ella mantem a disciplina n'um Estado bem organisado; e a mim garantia-me a tranquillidade dos domingos, o uso d'alguma roupa branca, e vinte mil reis mensaes.

This attitude, however, suits a bachelor; it maintains discipline in a well-organized state; and it guaranteed me the tranquility of Sundays, the use of some white clothes, and twenty thousand reis monthly.

Não posso negar, porém, que n'esse tempo eu era ambicioso―como o reconheciam sagazmente a Madame Marques e o lepido Couceiro.

I cannot deny, however, that at that time I was ambitious - as Madame Marques and the refined Couceiro sagely recognized.

Não que me revolvesse o peito o appetite heroico de dirigir, do alto d'um throno, vastos rebanhos humanos;

Ainda assim, eu não me considerava sombriamente um «pária».

In the summer afternoons, on the free benches of the Passeio, one enjoys the softness of an idyll; it is enjoyable in the evening at Martinho, sipping coffee, listening to the verbose insults of the homeland...

Depois, nunca fui excessivamente infeliz―porque não tenho imaginação: não me consumia, rondando e almejando em torno de paraisos ficticios, nascidos da minha propria alma desejosa como nuvens da evaporação d'um lago; não suspirava, olhando as lucidas estrellas, por um amor á Romeo, ou por uma gloria social á Camors.

After all, I was never excessively unhappy - because I have no imagination: I was not consumed, wandering and dreaming of fictitious paradises, born from my own desirous soul like clouds from the evaporation of a lake; I did not sigh, looking at the luminous stars, for a love like Romeo, or for a social glory like Camors.

Sou um positivo.

Só aspirava ao racional, ao tangivel, ao que já fôra alcançado por outros no meu bairro, ao que é accessivel ao bacharel.

Eram sempre obras de titulos ponderosos: Galera da Innocencia, Espelho Milagroso, Tristeza dos Mal Desherdados...

They were always works with weighty titles: Galera da Innocencia, Miraculous Mirror, Sadness of the Unloved...

O typo venerando, o papel amarellado com picadas de traça, a grave encadernação freiratica, a fitinha verde marcando a pagina―encantavam-me!

The venerable type, the yellowed paper with moth bites, the serious Freitatic binding, the green ribbon marking the page - they enchanted me!

Depois, aquelles dizeres ingenuos em letra gorda davam uma pacificação a todo o meu sêr, sensação comparavel á paz penetrante d'uma velha cêrca de mosteiro, na quebrada d'um valle, por um fim suave de tarde, ouvindo o correr d'agua triste...

Then, those naive sayings in bold letters gave a pacification to my whole being, a sensation comparable to the penetrating peace of an old monastery fence, in the broken of a valley, at a gentle end of the afternoon, listening to the sad running of water...

Uma noite, ha annos, eu começára a lêr, n'um d'esses in-folios vetustos, um capitulo intitulado Brecha das Almas; e ia cahindo n'uma somnolencia grata, quando este periodo singular se me destacou do tom neutro e apagado da pagina, com o relevo d'uma medalha d'ouro nova brilhando sobre um tapete escuro: copío textualmente:

One night, years ago, I had begun to read, in one of those old folios, a chapter entitled Breach of Souls; and I was falling into a pleasant drowsiness, when this singular period stood out from the neutral and faded tone of the page, with the relief of a new golden medal shining on a dark carpet: I copy it verbatim:

Quiz lêr mais; mas as linhas fugiam, ondeando como cobras assustadas, e no vazio que deixavam, d'uma lividez de pergaminho, lá ficava, rebrilhando em negro, a interpellação estranha―«tocarás tu a compainha?»

I wanted to read more; but the lines fled, waving like frightened snakes, and in the void they left, of a parchment pallor, there remained, glittering in black, the strange interpellation - "will you ring the bell?"

Uma influencia sobrenatural apoderando-se de mim, arrebatava-me devagar para fóra da realidade, do raciocinio:

A supernatural influence seizing me, carried me slowly away from reality, from reasoning:

e no meu espirito foram-se formando duas visões―d'um lado um Mandarim, decrepito, morrendo sem dôr, longe, n'um kiosque chinez, a um ti-li-tin de campainha; do outro toda uma montanha de ouro scintillando aos meus pés!

Isto era tão nitido, que eu via os olhos obliquos do velho personagem embaciarem-se, como cobertos d'uma tenue camada de pó; e sentia o fino tinir de libras rolando juntas.

This was so vivid that I could see the old character's oblique eyes becoming dim, as if covered by a thin layer of dust; and I could feel the fine tinkling of pounds rolling together.

E immovel, arripiado, cravava os olhos ardentes na campainha, pousada pacatamente diante de mim sobre um diccionario francez―a campainha prevista, citada no mirifico in-folio...

And motionless, shuddering, I fixed my burning eyes on the bell, peacefully placed before me on a French dictionary - the bell foreseen, cited in the miraculous in-folio...
